Wisdom of the Way

Taoist Knowledge

Explore the profound wisdom of Taoism — the origins, beliefs, and practices of this ancient tradition.

Origin

The origins of Taoism can be traced to the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods of the 4th century BCE, with its foundations laid by the thought of philosophers such as Laozi and Zhuangzi.

  • Early thought: centred on Laozi's Tao Te Ching as its core text, advocating "governing through non-action" and "the Tao following nature."
  • Formation as a religion: as an organised religion, Taoism took formal shape during the Eastern Han dynasty (around the 2nd century CE), when Zhang Daoling founded the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice — beginning the history of Taoist sectarian development.

Belief

Taoism's system of belief unfolds around the "Tao," emphasising the harmonious coexistence of humanity with nature and with the cosmos.

Customs

Taoist customs encompass every aspect of life, reflecting the practical character of Taoist thought.

Activities & Rituals

Taoist rituals are at once religious, artistic, and social. Usually led by Taoist priests, they fall into two kinds: communal temple rites and individual self-cultivation.
